(note that mat fees are due to increase by 50p from july 1st, also if it is your first session then it's free) -- documents membership form child protection policy members code of conduct coaches code of conduct judo information -- history & principles judo is derived from jujitsu. it was created by professor jigoro kano in 1882. the name judo was chosen because it means the "gentle way". kano emphasised the larger educational value of training in attack and defence so that it could be a path or way of life that all people could participate in and benefit from. in 1964, men's judo competition became a part of the olympics, the only eastern martial art that is an official medal sport. in 1992 judo competition for women was added to the olympics. judo is practiced on mats and consists primarily of throws, grappling, which includes pins, strangles and arm locks. a good judoka will use timing and leverage to bring his opponent off balance and execute a throw. once the judoka has thrown his opponent to the ground, he will use hold-down techniques, chokes, strangleholds, and arm locks to control and subdue the opponent. the main principles of judo are "maximum efficiency" and "mutual welfare and benefit." the goal of maximum efficiency teaches the judoka to use the least amount of physical strength necessary to throw an opponent. this is accomplished by proper use of technique and timing. the goal of mutual welfare and benefit was an extension of kano's belief that judo could help the individual become a better member of society. kano felt that the personal discipline that judo taught would extend beyond the dojo into daily life and could allow the judoka to become a more productive member of society. -- training judo would be a good choice for most children because it is safe and fun. judo training has many forms for different interests. some students train for competition by sparring and entering the many tournaments that are available. other students study the traditional art and forms of judo. other students train for self-defence, and yet other students do judo for fun. black belts are expected to learn all of these aspects of judo. because judo originated in modern times it is organised like other major sports with one international governing body, the international judo federation (ijf). judo promotes flexibility, develops speed and co-ordination, strengthens the cardiovascular system, and promotes balanced muscular development. many judo techniques can also be employed as a means of self-defence. the throws and chokeholds of judo are particularly effective if one is forced to deal with an assailant. -- competitions & gradings there are many different competitions available to those players who are confident enough to have a go. competitions are usually split based on grade as to gauge a level of experience. players are then split into different weight categories, at the moment these are 60, 66, 73, 81, 90, 100 and +100kg for men. for women the weights categories are 42, 48, 57, 63, 70, 78 and +78kg. judo ranks are awarded for developing proficiency in certain techniques and for regular practice. all judoka begin as white belts. over time, they progress through yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, and black belt (or dan grade). 6th dan is a red and white striped belt. ryecroft have produced or helped produce a number of black belts and are putting together a ryecroft dan grade registrar to show those people over the years who have been members of the club who have reached this excellent level! -- rules & scoring new rule changes are being brought into the sport in order to evolve the sport and make it more enjoyable for everyone. here is a guide to the new rules which are being rolled out internationally points are awarded for throwing an opponent, holding an opponent on his back while on the mat for a designated amount of time. a match is won with a "perfect throw" called an ippon, two near perfect throws called wazari, holding an opponent on his back on the mat for 20 seconds, a combination of one wazari and holding an opponent down for 15 seconds, or submitting an opponent with a choke or arm lock. although an ippon is the objective, there are partial points scored. in each bout, however, it is the highest quality score that wins.
